MORE THAN THE RIVER
MORE THAN THE RIVER
Psalms 46:4
There is a river, the streams whereof shall make glad the city of God, the holy place of the tabernacles of the most High.
There is a river.
It’s not just any river, it’s the river of God. Psalm 46:4 tells us, “There is a river, the streams whereof shall make glad the city of God, the holy place of the tabernacles of the most High.” This is no ordinary body of water. It’s the very flow of life that comes from the heart of God Himself. It’s a picture of grace, joy, peace, and provision, all flowing freely from the Source, who is our loving Father.
Every river has a source. Without it, there would be no current, no movement, no life. That source for us is God. He is where everything starts, and from whom all Blessings flow.
Your peace, your joy, your wisdom, your strength, it all begins with Him. Just like the river draws from the high springs in the mountains, we draw from the throne of Grace. Without that connection, the river dries up. And so do we.
But here’s what’s so beautiful, God doesn’t just give you a small trickle. He pours out rivers. Rivers that refresh dry hearts. Rivers that wash away burdens. Rivers that bring healing. And your life is meant to carry that flow into everything you do and everything you touch.
Rivers also have a destination. They don’t just exist to gently flow without purpose. There is a direction and a path for every River. Just like there is a destiny as the river winds its way to the ocean, you also are headed somewhere in the plan of God. He’s mapped it out and sees the end from the beginning. You may not always know the bends and turns, but trust that He’s leading you to a good place, a place of impact, of promise, of fruitfulness.
And here’s something else to remember, rivers don’t just exist for themselves.
Have you ever stopped to consider all that depends on the river? Trees line its banks, digging their roots deep for nourishment. Animals come daily to drink and hunt for food. Birds rest in the branches. Fish swim freely. Even flowers bloom because of it. In the same way, your life and your connection to God matters to more people than you realize. Your peace brings peace to others. Your joy is contagious. Your wisdom has influence. Your prayers cover the sick.
When you stay connected to the Source, your life becomes a blessing to more than just you. You become like a river in the Kingdom, bringing gladness to the “city of God.”
But sometimes… something happens.
Just like in nature, rivers can get obstructed. A fallen tree or a pile of debris, it doesn’t take much to block the flow. And what happens after that? The river starts to shift. It doesn’t stop flowing entirely, because the source is still pouring out, but it has to find another way so the water reroutes. It overflows somewhere else. It carves a new path.
And the places it was meant to reach? They dry up.
This is what happens to us sometimes. We let things block the flow from God to us. Distractions, unconfessed sin, unforgiveness, fear, doubt, any of these can become obstructions to our soul. The Spirit is still moving, still trying to flow into us, but if the channel is blocked, He’ll redirect. He’ll still bless, but perhaps in a different place. Someone else will say yes. Someone else will respond. And we may miss what was originally meant for us.
That’s is a humbling thought? We should let this reality bring awareness to our heats. The beauty of God’s Grace is this. We can always reconnect and reopen the channel. The River hasn’t stopped. The Source hasn’t dried up. God hasn’t moved and the Spirit still wants to flow, right through your life.
So here’s a question for you today.
Ask yourself: What’s been obstructing the River in my life? What’s keeping the flow of God’s joy, wisdom, or power from reaching the places it’s meant to reach?
Is there a relationship that needs healing? A mindset that needs changing? A habit that you need to put down?
And then, just as you would pull sticks and stones from a stream to let it flow freely again, bring those things to Jesus. And One by one, let Him clear the way.
He knows how to unblock the channels of your heart. He knows how to restore the flow.
And as He does, you should expect things to bloom again.
Expect the thirsty places to be watered. Expect the dry, cracked soil of your Spirit to soften. Expect joy to return. Expect fresh ideas to be born. New opportunities, and a deeper fellowship with God.
Also expect that others around you, your family, your friends, even strangers, will be refreshed by your overflow.
Because you are not a pond or a simple container.
You are part of God’s River, meant to carry His presence and power into every space you enter.
A River that makes glad the city of God. A River that cannot be stopped unless you stop receiving the flow from the source of Living Water. And even then, the Source remains and will continue to flow.
So today, reconnect and let God’s Spirit continue flowing to you and through you in the Name of Jesus.
